Leadership Experience

In group projects, I am that person. The one that enjoys stepping up and leading team meetings, ensuring everything gets done to a certain standard of excellence. That's why when I join an organization, I do not enjoy only being involved at the surface. I like taking leadership roles to further develop my management skills and get more deeply involved in the organizations I care about.

Beth Wood Chapter of PRSSA, President

I am serving my second term as President of PRSSA at IU after two years of involvement in the organization. As President, I manage an executive board of eight people and about 100 members. I lead weekly executive board meetings where we plan events and get committee updates. I oversee the "big picture" of PRSSA by working with the executive board to plan and promote monthly programs, educate members of PRSSA National initiatives, and maintain a balanced budget. One of my main goals as President is to provide members with as many real-life opportunities as possible, whether that be committee work, case study competitions, or access to jobs and internships in the future.

Last year, I increased spring membership by 50 percent. I also planned and coordinated an event for the Greek community about media relations, resulting in a 20 percent increase in attendance over the previous year.

Media Living Learning Community

The Media Living Learning Community (Media LLC) is a residential community of about 50 journalism students pursuing media-related careers. As part of the community, members attend monthly faculty dinners with IU professors, meet with IU Journalism Speaker Series participants, and network with professionals at trips to various cities including Indianapolis, Memphis, Washington D.C., Atlanta, and New York City.

During the current 2013-2014 school year, I serve as Alumni Advisor. I advise the leadership council in planning and executing various events including a networking trip to New York City in the spring. I also hold weekly office hours, acting as a resource for residents and helping them with any questions they may have about journalism or college life.

For the 2012-2013 school year, I was chosen to serve as Student Director of the Media LLC. In this capacity, I acted as a role model for the community and assisted the executive board in planning and executing a trip to Atlanta where we visited CNN, the Coca-Cola Museum, and the public relations team for the Atlanta Hawks basketball team.

From 2011-2012, I served as Alumni Advisor as well, helping the residents plan and execute a networking trip to Washington D.C. where we visited NPR, Bloomberg, the Newseum and Congress.

I lived in the Media LLC from 2010-2011 and was involved as Treasurer. I created a budget and handled the finances for the trip to Indianapolis and Memphis.

IU School of Journalism Ambassador

I am serving my second year as Journalism Ambassador for the IU School of Journalism, along with about 30 other students. We represent and promote the school at functions such as Speaker Series events and an annual trip to Chicago. We also give tours of Ernie Pyle Hall to prospective students and parents and answer any questions they may have. Last year I was chosen to present the opening remarks at the Alumni Reception in Chicago to over 100 guests.
